Jackie Chan vs. Starbucks

The news about Jackie Chan brought back memories. Drunken Master is one of those first movies Papsie and I watched together. Yes, one of the firsts :-P because there're only a few movies we viewed in our first year as sweethearts. I call them our first movies.

Back to the news, Jackie Chan would soon have Jackie Chan's Java Coffee in the Philippines and is anticipated to be a rival of Starbucks in the future.

I haven't tried Starbucks. It is not a necessity to me. Not because I am stingy but it's more of being practical. And even if Jackie Chan is a favorite, I don't think I would frequent the coffee shop. But wait, will he visit his coffee shop once in a while? I am having second thoughts here. :-)

What do you think Starbucks patronizers, is Jackie Chan's coffee shop a threat?

Here are some words to live by from Jackie Chan:

Coffee, like music and movies, knows no barriers.

Coffee is also a language in itself.

Here is Jackie Chan today:

  1. hi bing :: missed you :)

i prefer Seattle's Best Coffee (now owned by starbucks) and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf over starbucks . . . of course, the minimum-wage earner here in the states can easily afford to indulge themselves with gourmet coffee in comparison to the exploited minimum-wage-earning masa in the philippines . . .

  2. hi, milkphish! missed you, too. blogging time is becoming less. busy, busy, as always.

with the inescapable high prices of commodities here, i will always have second thoughts buying gourmet food..

  3. Hmmm interesting... I'm definitely going to try Jackie's coffee out of curiosity...but whether I'm going back to his cafe depends on the quality of the products and the service, not the fact that it's Jackie's coffee...

as of now, I don't think it's a threat to Starbucks. We have lots of coffee shops here but people still flock to Starbucks because of its name and image, not necessarily because of the products...

if anything is going to be a threat to SB, I hope it's a local coffee shop :)

  4. that's a good point, and one that business owners should consider - quality and service. but you mentioned that SB is known for its name and image, not necessarily the products. quite contradictory.

  5. Starbucks has a name already! but let's see how Java Coffee marketing can compete with Starbucks.

Im a coffee addict and i'll definitely try it once i come back there!

  6. another starbucks fan! like cyberpunk, mmy-lei, i prefer to have a local coffee shop beat starbucks.

  7. With the Pinoy showbiz mentality, they should probably get Manny Pacquiao's to do Mr. Bean coffee as well. I'm sure Jackie Chan's presence will have some positive effect on Java sales but I doubt if it will be a slam dunk as real coffee drinkers will not switch allegiance because of a celebrity endorsement.

  8. Yep! i think Jackie's coffee shop will be a big problem for starbucks.

    happy sunday,tita bing! :D

  9. with a celebrity endorsement here in the Philippines, at kahit si Manny Pacquiao pa yan, most probably people will flock the first days. i think, bw, it will still be the quality of the product, and the service as well, that will make them succeed beating Starbucks. it will take time, but with the many coffee shops, and some with considerable rates, there is really that apprehension.

you have tasted Jackie Chan's coffee already, jane?

that's quite an information, din-din. and about Jackie Chan, oo nga, no? parang di tumatanda. di naman siya ganun ka-handsome like Nico (hahaha), pero he has this appeal.

  10. I don't think he will be able to beat Starbucks.
He is an actor and as such I think he is not well placed to run coffee shops. Money is not enough to run a business.

  11. If they were to endorse a Manny Pacquiao coffee it better be for the masa, ala-kape barako, pampalakas ng suntok.. he he.. Starbucks even here in Canada is considered gourmet. We have the ubiquitous donut shops selling Tim Horton and Coffee Time for a dollar and a dime a cup - why spend 2 bucks or even more depending of the size - for a Starbucks. It's good coffee though - strong and full taste which means less caffeine. Nothing beats brewing your cofee at home. You can always buy a pound of ground Starbucks and brew it a home and adjust it to your taste.

  12. good idea, bw! coffee na pampalakas ng suntok! ha ha that's the point, we can always opt to brew coffee at home.

hi, sidney, you think so? well, i think most everybody thinks that way, too - that starbucks cant be defeated. we have to see it though, how Jackie's coffee will fare after a couple of years.

  13. "d**n you, i know kung-fu" kakamiss drunken master.

i doubt they will match starbucks but it will depend on their marketing strut. they're (starbucks) too commercial, sort of mcdonalds. for me, any coffee will do, don't care about the name... just the potency of the brew.

namiss ko tuloy kapeng barako. :)

  14. Let's not forget the secret of Starbucks -- they sell not only coffee but its "lifestyle experience" as well.

  15. isa ka pala sa mga mahilig sa kapeng barako, jepapertz.

lifestyle experience...hmmm, that's nice. but who knows if a novelty could outdo the connoisseur?

  16. Jacky chan's coffee shop here in Singapore closed shop. Nit really as good and as well- stablished as 'Starbuck's', or singapore's very own 'Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf'.

  18. Hi Bingskee,

    Great blog! =)

(See? Didn't that just look like spam? =D)

I think Jackie Chan's cafe wouldn't do as well as Starbucks but I wouldn't hesitate to sample a cup.

Actually, I don't do Starbucks, et al, unless I'm stuck in a mall with a reading itch or if the people I meet with insist on it. I'd rather settle for my daily 3-in-1's over the cafe brews anytime.

    More power, Bingskee! =)

  19. I go for neither. I'd still patronize the Nescafe mocha at our office pantry. It's strong. Above all, free. Hehe.

  20. back then i remember going to different coffee shops not to taste their coffee but to sample those drinks that arent coffee.. before i worked in a callcenter, ive only tasted coffee say more or less 4 times.. i hated coffee! but when i started working in a call center already.. sigh. it became my bestfriend. so will it be a threat you say? hhmm.. well we'll see bout that. actually i cant wait. haha. oh hey ive moved. will be linking you still :D

  24. I love The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. I don't think Jackie Chan's Java will sway me from my CBTL fix :)

  25. hi, mr robert eckert. thanks for dropping by.

ms/mr coffeelover, i dont even know it there is a CBTL here in the Philippines :-)

  26. from what i read the first branch would be here in Manila, and then expand to China, Hong Kong, and Singapore. so i don't know how there could be a branch that closed down in Singapore (as mentioned in one of the replies earlier).
Anyway, there is no way Jackie's Java will beat Starbucks because i think they cater to a different market. SB targets mostly the A-B crowd, and I think JJ will be more of a B-C-D+ crowd drawer. from what I hear they are openning the first branch at the Mall of Asia, not exactly the hangout of Manila's poshest...

    ReplyDelete
  27. could argue about it, GG. i havent gone to any SB branch.

if JJ could target the CD crowd, dont you think it is possible that it could beat SB, even if they are not the posh crowd? a multitude of the CD could contribute to the business, i think.
