52Photos Project #13: Celebration

52 Photos Project

There is so much to celebrate about life. In our family, the natal day is always celebrated, simply or extravagantly, depending on varied situations.

One of the most celebrated is hubby's birthday. Having many friends, appreciated by many, or loved or cherished by a lot of people, his birthdays do not pass without the celebration.

The photo above shows Papsie with his birthday cake made by daughter Kay. It was a novelty for him and his friends seeing a cake with a candle that looks like a firework.

What is a birthday without the delicious food, cakes and sweets, and ice cream?

People Always Forget

An earth filled barangay road. There is somewhat a sad air as we wait for the barangay election results.  Today is election day for the barangay, choosing a barangay captain and seven (7) councilors.  The reason for the melancholic atmosphere is the observed neck to neck fight between the two (2) candidates for barangay captain.  As a family that belongs to the group of people who desire change, and a strong, if not total, response against corruption, it will be sad news indeed if our bet will loose.

Patronage still rules, I guess, if the result did not do us favor.  People always forget, too, that those people did not deliver the service they ought to have given during those (more than) two decades in the seat.  As Barbara Streisand's song goes, "What's too painful to remember, we simple choose to forget."  True, perhaps what is happening is that the pain of betrayal caused by corruption of those people are too difficult to accept and bear that these people will just choose to support and cling to the hope that these people will do better.  Or are Filipinos just plain stupid?  If this happens in a small unit like the barangay, what hope is left for the whole country?

It pains me to hear the many stories of corruption and yet there is a great possibility that they will be again seated and do what they do best.

Photohunt: Stir

This is a favorite Filipino dish known as Nilagang Bulalo or Beef Marrow Stew.  It causes a stir in the palate and among friends and family while savoring its wonderful taste. It is one of the delicious dishes that many love, and has a few versions of it in some parts of the country.

If you are interested to try it, you can find the recipe here.

Complicated Love - Story #5

What do I think about a May (January)-December affair?

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="126"]Freddie Aguilar Cover of Freddie Aguilar[/caption]

Recently, there was this news about the (in)famous Freddie Aguilar, and his affair with a 16 year-old girl. I have to admit that I was one of those who reacted nonconformably to the news.  It is but normal for a mother of a young girl to feel aghast that her young daughter is in a relationship with a 60 year-old man who is more than two decades older than her.

To wrap up the story that had circulated, Ka Freddie and his girlfriend met in a campaign sortie.  He didn’t know that the girl was only 16 because she looked physically mature for her age.  After that event, the affair began which triggered differing opinions and reactions from netizens and the common people alike when a photo was posted in a social network.

My thoughts:

An online psychologist wrote his views about the affair, stating the probable reasons why Ka Freddie fell for a very much younger girl and why the girl also fell for a very much older man.  It was a careful assessment ranging from his ‘biological wiring’ to his psychological gain.

I am not opposed to a May (January)-December affair only if the girl is with age.  By this, I mean the girl is more mature physically and mentally.  I would even include that the girl must be emotionally mature, too, but maturity can also vary among different individuals.   So with a woman aged 35 and with a lover aged 71, for example, that would be acceptable for me.

Why, one may ask? Contrary to notions that these older men have their foremost desires to be with a very much younger girl (in their teens) because they wanted to have partners with great child-bearing potential or have great chance of producing healthier offspring, I think most old men (especially those with children already from previous relationships) will not consider this (having a baby, or having babies) a priority thought in desiring to have a very much younger woman.  Having babies would require much of his responsibility and he would be back again to zero, taking care of a baby that would require physical presence, strength, and enough resources.  Who would want that when you are at your prime just wanting to enjoy the remaining years of your life?

No, I don’t believe it is about having babies.  I would agree that it is more about the psychological gain that even if he is already 60, he has a trophy girlfriend (from the daughter’s view).  As a woman, I feel upset with the notion that women (including young girls) are treated like mere trophies.  It is with allowing this ‘culture’ why men debase women.

Ka Freddie deserves his right to be in love, I do not contradict that but enough with the ‘talking about having babies’ crap.  I hope with his love, he would let the young girl grow and learn more about life than being stuck blindly to the idea that this is what life is for her.  I believe the young girl also dreams about many things, unless she is made to believe otherwise.

Why not, choc nut?

The post is not about Choc Nut. I know it's a feeble attempt to get one's attention but it's actually the intention. :D

It's about why we (my family - kids and Papsie) like to hang out and eat out at Banapple. (The last time we had our dinner was on September 7 of this year.) First, it's affordable and one's money's worth.  Second, the foods are delish, and third, the eatery's layout is cool with the warm lighting and design.

Who would not want to try their Super Caesar Salad?

DSC05591

I ordered Herbed Chicken Rolls with Basil Cream Sauce. It has a very large serving of rice with it. It's a little salty (but creamy as what was implied in its name) for me but it goes well with rice. Papsie had Banapple Beef and Sausage Stew. The taste of the dish was just right.

Guess what they had for themselves? You are right if you guessed pasta. They ordered Fettuccine Jacintha and Trio of Sausages Fettuccine respectively.

Though we had a hard time looking for a parking slot and Papsie almost lost his temper because of it, the night ended with us full and happy.
