A Purse is But a Rag Unless You Have Something in It*

How true.  Fancy a purse without money in it.  That would make one feel miserable.

The frequently heard, “Don’t say you don’t have money because a coin is money still.”  Along with this, some would say that repeating the phrase will really make your life miserable and without money.  Baseless as it is, I view the saying as words of inspiration – not to consider lack as hindrance to pursue a dream, or as reason to surrender.

The mind is like a rag, too, without knowledge and wisdom.   When devoid of learning and required information, the mind is useless.  Therefore, the owner feels tattered, too, and unconfident.  Wonder how true the claim of a friend that his brain is more expensive than other brains because it is not overused.  Not true, of course, because that was spoken in jest.

My purse is not brimming with money.  It is light even with money in it.  That saddens me once in a while, but it doesn’t keep me from going on to seek ways to make it a little heavy, and not overflowing.  Just enough money in it makes me feel I am not void of sense.  That somehow I make something out of my existence – to provide, and be of help if necessary.

My mind is not of a genius either.  It craves for knowledge, and it still is up to this time.  But when crammed with concerns, regrets, and sad and angry thoughts, it is better to be without its fill.

  1. It's kinda like a glass of water. While you see it as half-empty, others see it as half-full. I think it really depends on how you look at your situation, and whether you will allow it to affect your life or not.

Sorry if I seem a bit blurred there, bing. I have a cold and I can't think straight today. :-(

  2. This is what I don't like either "But when crammed with concerns, regrets, and sad and angry thoughts, it is better to be without its fill."

Speaking of money: Someone told me before, the difference between the rich and poor is diskarte. Diskarte makes the poor rich, the rich without it becomes poor.

  4. I've adopted the attitude of saying "I chose not to buy it at this time" instead of "I cannot afford to buy it" whenever faced with an item I have not enough funds for at that moment. This way, even in dire circumstances, I still empower myself even if through realignment of perspective only.

I believe in continued learning as long as mentally capable. Actually, I took up a baking workshop in Diliman two summers ago. Although I never got to practice it since I have no oven, I've at least demystified for myself, the delicious baked goods that I enjoy to munch on every now and then. :)

  6. I agree that this is a song full of warmth and sentimentality and the melody is just so you know, nakakabighani. I think this is an old song coz I've been hearing this song when I was so much younger.

  7. that is a very positive perspective in life, eric. realigning one's perspective is not easy for everybody though.

  9. I always feel that we don't have enough money, that we could use more than we're getting. And expenses just seem to come up when you least expect them. But it never really saddened me. I've never really cared much for luxury or brand names anyway. As long as my family is fed and properly dressed, I'm happy.

And to your friend, what worth is a brain if you don't use or overuse it. I know, he was just kidding. :) But I like what you said : "But when crammed with concerns, regrets, and sad and angry thoughts, it is better to be without its fill."

  12. They say it is love of money and not money itself that is the root of all evil.

A 16 yr olf high school kid, for some reason gets a credit card from a bank with the minimum limit of $500. He doesn't have much cash save for his allowance money and a few bucks from his weekend half day part time job at Burger King , a transit pass takes him all over town but he feels and acts like he's loaded. If he wipes out the 500 limit in a jiffy, all he has to pay the bank is 15 bucks a month which he thinks he can. He loves the idea not knowing that he's being suckered into a system that will make his life miserable ... if he is not careful.

  13. that is a verse from the bible, bw. people can fall into the trap of easy money if not careful.

  14. I do not want to be rich, I just want to have enough.
I agree when they say that An idle mind is a devil's abode. And of course, we were blessed with intellect and it's something that we need to nourish depending on the situation as Snglguy said.

  20. I remember a true story of a poor poet from Ukraine. She wanted to thank the foreign missionaries and Ukrainian ministry workers in her church in a tangible way. But she didn't have any money -- most Ukrainians don't -- to do so. Instead, she wrote poems and gave them to the missionaries (one was my flatmate, an American Bible teacher).

One time, while on a bus on the way to Kiev, I saw my flatmate's purse. It was filled with a collection of folded paper notes. I asked her what those were, she (the American missionary) replied: "Ah, these are poems in Russian given to me by the handicapped Ukrainian lady in church. She's a poet. She gives me these poems as a way of expressing her gratitude to me. Because that all she has...words. Words that come from the heart. That's why these are so valuable to me."

The Ukrainian poet may not have a purse filled with money. But her heart and her words had blessed so much a lady missionary who comes from a very affluent country like the U.S.

  23. Hi Bing,...Oooops, that message was for Señor Enrique's blog. There must have been a jumble in my bloghopping. My slow internet connection would make it difficult for me to post succesfully all the time, so I have to copy each message I need to post and if it is not succesful, I just paste it and try again. I must have psted the wrong comment. Sorry talaga ha....

Now, I already forgot what to say about this post...What I anted to say here is that many says that money always make the world go round but I dare say, it is not all the time because it can't buy pure joy and contentment.

  24. ha ha, kaw talaga, major tom, naliligaw! i often here that, too, that money makes the world go round, but i prefer that love makes the world go round. :-)
