My son approached his teacher the other day to tell her that a page of his book had answers already (The school allows students to use second-hand books). He did this to actually ask her what to do. Then unexpectedly his teacher ripped the page from the book and told him to do the same to all the pages with answers. I was outraged to learn of this and told him that his teacher should have told him instead to reproduce copies from a brand new book and have them pasted on the pages. “Do you want me to talk to your teacher?” I asked him, to which I received the usual reply that “I’ll handle this myself.” I learned afterwards that this teacher is one of the best teachers, and that she has that ability to make her students learn. Now, if you will be asked to choose, would you have a) a skillful teacher that lacks EQ, or b) a mediocre teacher who has that capability to connect with her/his students?
We find ourselves entrapped sometimes with these teevee programs that show mouth-watering recipes. Just simply looking at the decorative and appetizing food makes the stomach grumble, isn’t it? They say that food should be attractive. It should first serve the eye before the gut. Would you prefer food a) for its glorious appearance, or b) for its taste even without the glamour?
Kay bought a best-seller book about Helen Keller, the deaf and blind woman who had triumphantly managed to acquire learning despite her condition. Daryl tossed a mind-boggling question, which I would like to share. If God asks you to give him back one of the two most important senses, would you rather give your a) eyesight, or your b) hearing sense? And why?

When There’re Only Two Choices

I firmly believe that it is attitude rather than aptitude that is the key to success.
ReplyDelete1. I would be terribly upset if a teacher tore off a page from my book because I could pass it on to a less fortunate student next year. And the teacher could've just as easily solved the problem with what you've suggested, Bing.
ReplyDelete2. I would prefer my everyday meals simple but delicious, but on special occassions, like taking loved ones out for their birthday, I would definitely go for a sumptuous lunch or dinner.
3. I'd let go of my eyesight because I'd be lost without music.
hi, mr peter! i agree.. thanks for dropping by. i appreciate it. :-)
ReplyDeleteeric, i was really mad with that teacher. but my son wont like me going to school to talk to her. Kay also told me not to waste my time, that teacher is in the border line of breaking apart, she said. why, oh why then, is she a teacher still?
i'd let go of my hearing sense naman. i am too scared to loose my eyesight that i even dream about it.
Being a teacher that produces students with high grades is not an excuse for a behavior like that. She should've known better even if she is a good teacher. Those kind of irrational behavior is unbecoming of a teacher and could've had an adverse effect on her students.
ReplyDeletevery unbecoming talaga, jhay. i was furious the time Daryl told me about it. ayaw lang kasi ng anak ko na kausapin siya.
ReplyDeleteOn 3:
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of "god" would ask such a thing? If there is one such god, then it is time to find a different one. A good example of this kind of wanna be god is gloria arroyo. She, however, asks all of us to deny ourselves of all our senses: see none of her evil, hear none of her evil, and speak none of her evil.
- ay tita bing, may ganun pa lang mga teacher?? i would definitely prefer a teacher who has what it takes to connect with her/his students?
ReplyDelete- i'd go for the taste.. =)
kahit na sabi ng lola ko, nung bata daw ako, takaw-mata ako. hehehe.
- i'd let of my hearing sense... there's just too much to see in this world.. at siguro dahil na din sa hilig ko sa photography..
hi, websurfer, that is a presupposition. there are trials in this life that is sometimes unfathomable. besides, God can be an angry God. who knows if God could allow it? as to gloria, she is beginning to be more a monster than a god. (this is a personal opinion, i apologize to her fans :-))
ReplyDeletehay, din, may mas malala pa sa kanya. karaniwan daw sa mga bata, takaw-mata. pareho pala tayong hindi kayang mawalan ng eyesight.
People who don't look for answers in the name of faith are deluded into believing "unfathomable trials," whatever that means.
ReplyDeleteI'd rather have my eyesight too.
ReplyDeleteto websurfer:
ReplyDeleteI suppose you are someone who "looks for answers in the name of faith", that also means you are a man/woman of faith? What kind of God then would let an innocent child be orphaned? Or a clean-living person be given the big C? Or a devout centenarian be left alone by her children, etc, etc? Surely there will be choices like to continue or not to continue believing there is a God. After all, "if there is one such god, then we can always find one"?
This reminds me of Job, the righteous man whom God let to suffer. What he had suffered is more than loosing eyesight or hearing sense. How can one therefore fathom these mysteries of God? (One of Job's questions, too.) How can a just God agree with Satan to torture him? Those were unfathomable to me, if not to you.
And by the way, i am not referring to a 'god', but a real God.
pareho pala tayo, irene.
Hi, Bing!
ReplyDelete1. For a teacher who is described as "one of the best," your son's teacher behaved in such a strange way. You posed a rather difficult question there. If you ask me, I'd like a teacher with both IQ and EQ.
2. Well, it's definitely a plus to have good-tasting food that looks great. But to answer your question, I'd always put more premium on taste than on appearance. Although lots of restaurant and hotel food offer both. But of course, they're a bit on the expensive side.
3. Being a visual person who loves photography and films, I'd rather let go of my hearing sense. But that will be tough since I love music, too.
A teacher should inspire, A student can always learn from other sources, but only a good teacher can give the right directions.
ReplyDeleteRe food: Of course, I'd rather go for the taste. What's the use of looking good if it tastes like crap?
As for the senses, I would rather lose my hearing than eyesight. You can't really move around when you're blind can you? :-)
I'd rather die than not having eyes to appreciate the beauty of this world.
ReplyDeleteA cooking show is an art form. Presentation and preparation are the key points. A cooking show has nothing to do with taste !
hey, jayred, how are you? i agree that a teacher should have both an IQ and an EQ. that applies to everybody, too, i guess. the questions i posted here really are brainteasers. it had me pondering.
ReplyDeletevery nice points, single. i had observed that with the group, there are more who would want to have their eyesight left. :-)
hi, mikey. welcome to my site. you have a point but this is choosing between taste and presentation.
Gee, that teacher is surely mean and that antic does not really allow a healthy situation for effective learning. I think the act was a litle atrocious that the teacher could be subject of complaint. Teachers should be like second mothers to their pupils, always wary against hurting the kids and trying their darnest to understand every untoward situation.
ReplyDeleteif only Daryl would agree, i could've gone to the school to make a complaint. but i am crossing my fingers that there'll be no other incidents like that or worse that could happen. God forbid, major tom
ReplyDelete1. If given another choice that is not to choose, I will choose this. My child does not deserve both.
ReplyDelete2. I would go for the taste. Food is for nourishment of the body.
3. Ang sagot kung may pagka pilosopo. If God comes to you, then you have nothing to choose from because you will burn. Remember the time of Abraham.
#1 answer is very safe
ReplyDelete#2 answer - id go for the taste, too
#3 naaliw ako sa sagot mo
tenk yu, rolly!
I would give up my sight i think because much of the judgements we make based on sight are wrong. Seeing is beleiving they say many of our beleifs are based on how something looks. I think having to listen without sight would be a wonderful experience. Imagine you would have to judge on what you heard the volume, the tone of voice, having to listen carefully to hear what was being said. Maybe it would be better for the world if we all went blind.
ReplyDeletewhoa! that's crude for me. well, perhaps in some ways, hearing is much better than seeing. maybe more challenging and honest?
