The Boy Who Seldom Smiles

This is Randel. Notice how he forces himself to smile. But I like this fair-skinned little boy though he seldom smiles. He is the four-year-old boy who does not go out of the house dirty or untidy. He is the little boy called 'kagawad' because his daddy is a kagawad ng barangay. You can see him clinging always to his daddy. And when his daddy (while playing mah jong) tells him to go home, he would reply, "Umuwi ka muna, uuwi rin ako."

He was once afflicted with the Kawasaki syndrome, also a deadly disease of young children not older than 5. I remember it is also an expensive disease because a child cannot be treated without spending lots of money for the treatment. I cannot erase the thought from my mind if the disease caused him this difficulty to smile willingly.

  3. why are the innocent always become victims of such diseases?

if he overcomes this, he will come out ten times stronger

  4. hey, slim whale! you're back. glad to see you here. :-D

it is sad to think that the innocent and the young mostly become victims of these nefarious diseases. we never know how they cope up.

randel was said to have been cured. i dont know of the possibility if such illness comes back again. i hope it will not come back again.

really glad to see you here. if time allows, i can go bloghopping again.

  5. Hmm, kinda like me. I always find it difficult to smile, especially in front of the camera. :-)

  6. i have a pamangkin who seldom smiles too, but when he does, its just priceless. it was fun though cause he has a chipped front tooth. its so irresistible still. =)

upto now kawasaki disease is still a poorly understood pathology. when i was in san lazaro hospital, pts with KD are usually confined together with dengue pts (pts whose diseases are caused by mosquitoes or arthropods). i dont know their rationale though i think theres a sort of connection poorly explained.

and yup the treatment is quite expensive, did he receive gamma globulins? vials of those cost too much. and i think aspirin is also prescribed (in theory, i dont know if they do that in praxis) =)

miss u bing. take care always. =)

actually, i am quite doubtful if the disease is clear to the patients and to the doctors as well, ruff. that is, are the doctors technically equipped on the identification and treatment of the disease? are the patients or the guardians of the patients informed about its symptoms, consequences, etc. i am very concerned about the possibility of confusion between KS and other diseases which display similar symptoms. I was not aware of the meds that were given to the kid, all i know was he once had this.

    take care, too, ruff :-)

  10. I better checked what Kawasaki Syndrome is. I haven't heard of a disease that affects the facial expression. I hope that Randel is simply grumpy...that it's not because of the disease.

Maybe Noypetes is right. The boy just need to mingle and play with kids his age :)

what baffles me, verns, is why is he grumpy? he is well fed, well clothed. baka naman kaya kulang sa atensyon di kaya? when we invite him sa house namin, mukha siyang confused kasi sa attention na ibinibigay, pero he speaks smartly, hindi pabeybi. kakatuwa nga kahit di ngumingiti.

  12. I learned something new today. Thanks!

I browsed through the link on Kawasaki syndrome and learned that it can also afflict adults. Maybe I have it since I have been described as someone who has a perpetual frown. :|

I wish for the boy's recovery and for the disease not to recur.

  13. you're welcome, beatburn.

really, it can also afflict adults? did it tell if the sickness really has to do something with the frown?

i hope and pray for his full recovery, too. he's a cute little boy. mahirap makita na naghihirap ang mga bata at hindi makita ang ngiti sa mga labi nila.
