When we enter into an endeavor, we usually do not know what lies ahead. We get so excited being involved in an activity or an undertaking that will surely harness our talents and abilities. We get thrilled that we will get to know or meet other people which is as diverse and as unique like us. We get hesitant because we know we will also be dealing with drawbacks. But the most important thing is we get exhilarated with the thought that someday somehow our effort and talents will be recognized and that someday we will reap the fruits of our labor.
This is also how it is when we decided to enter the blogging world. Most often, we always read tributes that are given to excellent bloggers, or comments that praise the magnificence or uniqueness of a writer, or mentions that detail the craftmanship of a web blog or a web site. These writers surely had reaped what their determination had earned them. They are so popular so to speak. But only a few, as I have observed as to this time, remained humble and magnanimous in their victory.
These are some observations about SOME popular bloggers:
- They wanted fame. (who doesn’t?) But the eagerness to acquire fame become so evident that they wanted many people to visit their sites but they do not intend to return the visit as acknowledgment, no replies or even a single comment. Though a blogger could always choose not to come back if the site did not pass their taste, it is a waste of time to bother.
- They cannot afford to receive criticisms. Some of them have this mentality that they are the best, and no one can beat them. Observe how they are threatened with negative remarks.
- They seek only influential bloggers. If you are not a significant blogger, why would they care? You may be bright, eloquent or magnificent but if they cannot gain something from you one way or another then you are not a candidate link.
- They form bandwagons. If you do not go along, you do not belong.
- They glorify themselves with the idea that they are being imitated, plagiarized or robbed of concepts. There are plagiarists, alright, but this is such a delicate matter that you cannot just throw such accusation outright. They are not the only ones who can think of that particular concept.
- They are arrogant. A humble person even in front of an adversary or a detractor will be polite and discreet. This should also be true with bloggers. Arrogance could reduce to rubble a fellow blogger’s regard to a popular blogger.
- They also steal ideas. Just observe. To maintain their popularity, they have to be consistent; they need to have clever ideas to maintain consistency. But there are also times when their minds become inactive (or their brains are not functioning well? ahihihi) and they could not think of anything bright. Your idea could be stolen and since the blog is popular, it continues to gain popularity though the idea came from you. The pilferage is not obvious because of the add-on words.
Popularity is not forever. But the question is how did you maintain that popularity during your time without sacrificing your values, beliefs and individuality? If you are an upcoming popular blogger, would you choose to be popular at the expense of others, or at all times be magnanimous in your victories?
These observations were not borne out of bitterness but out of the honest assessment on SOME popular bloggers.
ate bing, great post! some people are just being picky about linking as to one would think linking to a popular blog improve their status. it's like what if my links are all about music videos, does that lower my blog status? these people are so narrow-minded. when we started blogging weu had no one to link/exchange and afterawhile we exchange links and thats why we join "communities". well, picky people should lighten up a bit! makes me wonder, those people still come back to my blog. tsk..
ReplyDeletehave a great week. and keep smilin'.
hello bing -
ReplyDeletebato bato sa langit . . .
i hope i'm not one of the bloggers that you're referring to. *i stop by this place often, but i don't remember if i ever left a comment before. *i'm not popular --- i don't have a circle of friends anywhere :)
even yellowmetroaide who is supposed to be my blogging partner has abandoned me (temporarily, i hope). *my issue with plagiarism had more to do with image and bandwidth theft.
i see your link everywhere --- even in blogs that only have minimal blogger links. you're really one of the friendliest bloggers out there --- and teachersol.
i enjoy discovering new blogs and i would rather read the smaller ones than the huge, popular ones.
also, your blog looks good on ie, but not too well on firefox, which is my default browser --- your box ad (that one that says 'you are 45% normal...) is superimposed on your latest post, which makes it very difficult to read.
salamat.
bing,
truly every blogger has their own intention for blogging. popularity might be one of them. like you i wished they remain humble. let me plagiarize the following quote on humility by Master Po from my favorite TV series:
"It is written, 'Shape clay into a vessel, it is the space within that gives it value. Place doors and windows in a house, it is the opening that brings light within. Set spokes within a wheel, it is the emptiness of the hub that makes them useful.' Therefore be the space at the center. Be NOTHING and you will have everything to give to others."
This is a tour-de-force Bing. You could see how everyone of us feels about blogging and we all can learn from this---not to be too ambitious to the point of malice. More power to you.
ReplyDeletenapadaan lang po from pinoyblog and my interest was peaked by your entry. pero totoo. i've been blog hopping to find friends in the US since I am new here and i have noticed what you have said. sad but it seems that they even fight among themselves for comments made and entried written. aren't blogs supposed to be for self-satisfaction and or to inform and help others? napaisip lang...
ReplyDeleteamong other reasons, blogs really should be for self-satisfaction or fulfillment and to share infos or offer help.
ReplyDeletethanks for dropping by.
hope you don't mind if I link to your site? would love to reasd it again and check on it from time to time for updates. good read! :)
ReplyDeleteI guess I can relate as well. Being basically a newbie (my blog is only a few months old), I can't help but sometimes feel like a second class blogger when compared to those who have been so long established that their names already form the pillars of Philippine blogging. These well known bloggers are always linked to, referred to, nominated for awards, and their opinions cited as gospel truth, when just like the rest of us, they occassionally come up with some posts which are just about as flat as day old Coke.
ReplyDeleteYeah, they hardly interact with "unknowns" so to speak, and don't take criticism very well.
I guess that's the difficulty of blogging for an audience...and a wide audience at that. You can lose focus of the fact that blogging was originally meant to be a place to write down your own personal thoughts.
I've been flooded before at times for posting less than popular ideas, but that's because I believe in what I posted. Some just play safe, unwilling to venture an unpopular view, of breaking the status quo, afraid of offending and losing their regular readers.
Such is the price of fame I guess. Fame, just like power, can corrupt one's soul. Look at Michael Jackson.
I'm only human, but I hope I don't get to be that kind of blogger, now or anytime soon. Like Casey Kasem said in his top ten show (Yeah, I know it betrays my age) "Keep your feet on the ground, but keep reaching for the stars."
Great post.
reading all the comments here makes me wonder... "onli in da pilipins" or "onli da pinoys"?
ReplyDeleteShucks. Akala ko mag-tell all ka na. Clue! Clue! Hehe. Sorry, sobrang chismoso lang ako.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, my theory is that in the blog/journal world, one way popularity can be gauged is how forceful your opinion is. The forceful a blogger/ journalista is, the more popular his/ her ranking goes up.
Of course, there are other popular bloggers who don't seem to be forceful in opinion but-- like I said, theory pa lang yun. :-D
great post. even though u were referring to someone or some people in particular, it could be read as part of an "ethical guide" to blogging.
ReplyDeletegaling.
-jj
Blogging ,so informal and raw with its free for all schema I think is really meant to be a forum where people poke at each other's brains. It's anonymity feature is which gives one incredible freedom to post his mind is absolutely wonderful. The moment we infuse a bit of formality, form cliques of bloggers who would like to think they are "alike" in some way or extol someone because of his spiffy looking website and confer him/her preferential treatment - all of the above may stir some form of turbulence that can distrupt the state of equilibrium and cause problems.
ReplyDeleteWe are not here to compete. Those who blog thinking competition are sadly misguided. Most of us blog for fun - speak your mind, rant, express your frustrations to relieve your depression, dream on - post it, feel good about it period !
Naku, Bing, totoo ang mga sinabi mo!
ReplyDeleteHi Bing,
ReplyDeleteThis was really interesting and enlightening, too! I must be really dense because for the life of me I can't seem to figure out which "big time" blogger(s) you might be referring to (siguro hindi ko siya binabasa? Hehe). Still, these are all good things to keep in mind. After all, we're here to express ourselves, but we need to remember to respect others' opinions and thoughts too.
Scratch my back, I'll scratch yours...ganyan lang rule dyan...ang sama ano?
i deeply admired you courage in writing this post....puits écrit
ReplyDeleteWell said. Bravo!!!
ReplyDeleteEncore!
erratum....
ReplyDeletei deeply admired your courage...(you)
playboy? i wish...hahaha
Goverment Record shows which is Bu. of Census...hehehe
that i have one only ex-girlfriend which became my wife and one and only wife up to now...with no other woman in my life....for the last 40+ yrs...hehehe
Bing,
ReplyDeleteSa dami naman ng nagreact, I highly doubt it if your message didn't reach across. (tama ba sinabi ko? hehe)
Too many nice and well said comments to mention on this post :)
Bing, there seems to be a technical problem with my server, Ploghost, or so they say. Hopefully they will soon have it repaired. I'll link you up in my blog.
ReplyDeleteNo worries Bing. You did encapsulate observations which most of us already felt. It is nice that you put it on paper so we can all intelligently talk about it. As far as I know no one has committed a crime so I don’t think any one of us is planning to launch at an air strike at someone soon. Heck, at the end of the day we still have our day jobs!
ReplyDeletenow you are popular....indeed...hehehe
ReplyDeletegosh, i do hope i dont have that attitude. i try to leave a msg every time i visit a blog. i write my own thoughts and experience. simple lang naman blog ko compared to other blogs. tita bing, do tell me if my blog is crap ha *lol* ingatz
ReplyDeletehi bing! huli man daw at magaling, kulelat parin :) sa dami na ng nag-comment i hope you don't mind one more...
ReplyDeleteintriga rin talaga ano, especially when you said "it was triggered by my curiosity why a popular blogger would take time hurling insults to a neophyte than returning a visit umandar din ang pagka chismosa ko. could there have been more to this than just blogging? pero i thought baka surface lang din yun. but you--you expressed your thoughts so eloquently, wala akong magawa kundi mag-bow. :)
First of all, I think if we get insulted by a blogger, we have the option to leave and never come back. After all, it's his/her domain and did not beg you to go to visit his/her blog. It's a free world. Let's not be too sensitive about it.
ReplyDeleteHowever, if you visit one's blog and expect that that blog owner owes you a visit/reciprocation, well I think you're in your wrong mind.
If you are just going to visit one's blog for traffic, that's another wrong reason to visit a blog.
Every blog owner has the choice to link a blog of his/her choice. If you're linking other blogs to become popular, iba rin yan. I link blogs that make sense or appeal to me. Kung yung blog mo hindi ma-appeal sa akin, please, I do not owe you anything. There's a lot of fishes in the ocean. For #$#%^ 's sake, just leave!
@thesearemyconfessions - hello, naligaw ka sa isang blog ko, a. nobody has the right to tell any blogger na crap ang blog niya. blogs are personally designed and maintained and what one blogger has in mind and have written is truly hers or his and nobody should ever consider it as crap. what a fellow blogger could do is to suggest for improvements. yours is a nice blog, masyadong madamdamin minsan. (",)
ReplyDelete@teachersol - hmmm... emotional vampires, ganda! well, they really suck the wits out of other people pag pinaiiral nila ang attitude nila.
@techguy - i am not POPULAR. i am tiny speck in this world of blogging. it is better to remain that way. cheers to you! and be a good boy he he he yelp! yelp!
hi again tita bing. thanks so much for the compliment. at least i know you enjoy reading my blog :) add ko din po 'tong site mo ha? ty ingatz
ReplyDeletei think, bloggers wanted to become famous for some reasons, and that one of these is money.
ReplyDelete.......
@Ka webspy,
ReplyDeleteEspecially if quite a sum is involved. ;)
@Ms. Bing,
Wow, 55 comments and counting (+1 if including this one)! This is getting to be a hot post!
Cheers!
Angelo

@teachersol - i dont know. they are always welcome to visit this site. anyway, there are two sides of the coin.
@kawebspy - nagkakapera din pala? no wonder.
@j angelo - oo nga, e. overwhelming and yet, nakakaalala din. there are people who go their way, too, to ruin, when slighted.
Wow, 57 comments na (+ this one, pang 58 na!)and counting...Indeed, your post has become the spark that started a praire fire...don't mind the anonymous posters, ibig sabihin lang nyan may tinatamaan...kasama silang masusunog sa praire fire...hehehe
ReplyDeleteMe again, Bing. I was not referring to your entry that wasn't a big deal. I was talking about how other people would think blogging could make them famous. In my opinion, there are no big time bloggers. Just bloggers, that's all. Maybe there are people who'd think some are bigger than others but then, that's a misconception. Anyway, there are always two sides of an issue. That's why I shy away from discussions such as these. Just like everbody else, we are all bloggers worthy of our own space on the web.
ReplyDeleteHAhaha, brilliant? i think you've given me too much undeserved credit. As I told you before, I just put my thoughts in my blog and that's it, as does everybody else.
kailangan ma publish to sa INQ online news.
ReplyDeleteGosh!! How true :)
ReplyDelete@sam - dahil din sa inyo that's why it spread. that goes to say that you have many friends who love to read, too. thanks uli.
ReplyDelete@rolly - yes, brilliant, and nice, too. to be visited by you is honor. that's it - we all deserve our own spaces on the web.
@knoizki - he he he hindi na kelangan..
@mr. schizophrenic - medyo nalito ang beauty ko nang bumisita sa site mo he he anyway, thank you sa dalaw. and true, meron talaga...
wow! very well said, miss bing.:) i agree, i agree.:)
ReplyDeletebing aka juliet:
ReplyDeleteAre you telling me that as long as I refrain from mentioning names in my blog or post, I can lambast anyone I like? That wouldn't be called malicious?
If you answered yes, then I'm totally perturbed and aghast.
popular.blogger.daw@gmail.com
ha ha ha okay, Angelo, a. clue, clue, clue!
ReplyDeletenow i am the one being amused. nanggagalaiti na...
to j racoma: are you somehow speculating that i am the sassy lawyer, perhaps? well, sorry to burst your bubble, but i am not her. and no, i'm not "fond of writing blind-item type blog posts." however, i think you are pretty lucky that i am not her. if you don't believe me, then go and ask her. be prepared for hell, though.
ReplyDeletebing aka juliet aka ursula:
pa-clue-clue ka pa dyan, obvious naman. pero teka, you haven't answered my query. ulitin ko, it looks like you are evading my question. answer my query: Are you telling me that as long as I refrain from mentioning names in my blog or post, I can lambast anyone I like? That wouldn't be called malicious?
popular.blogger.daw@gmail.com
bing aka juliet: suit my whims? what are you so evasive? the heat bothering you from the can of worms you opened? bwahahaha
ReplyDeletei say, if you can dish it, better be able to take it. 3 exchanges already and still, you can't answer a direct question. i say you're guilty, make that pretty much guilty as charged. malicious, malicious, MALICIOUS! better watch your steps, newbie. next time, people may not be as tolerant.
oist....the above comment was from moi, ok?
To A so called popular blogger: Bakit hindi mo sabihin kung sino ka? Sabi mo kay Bing you have to take what you dish out.
Nobody likes a bully. Obviously mas eloquent ka kay newbie. Hindi patas ang laban.
- An objective onlooker
all i can say is I am AMUSED...
ReplyDeleteOh, don't be coy cacofonix. Pa french-french ka pa. If you really wanted to rebuke a so called popular blogger then rebuke her in the vernacular.
- An objective onlooker
cacofonix, while I attempt to crack the vernacular mystery, how 'bout YOU crack the dictionary?
ReplyDeleterebuke = reprimand = pagalitan o "pangaralan" (original quotation marks supplied by you)
my point here is kung gusto mong i-"rebuke" si ascpb, dahil sa simula't sapul 'yun naman ang sinabi mo (quote: cacofonix said "oh the heck! can i rebuke this "popular blogger?""), siguraduhin mo nang naiintindihan ng lahat.
At sinabi mo na rin lang na "I'm willing to translate that both in Tagalog, English and the Visayan dialect if anyone's interested...:)., e di i-translate mo na lang na wala nang pasikot-sikot pa.
ReplyDeleteGanyan talaga. if you dabble in pseudo-French and insist on being "misteryosa" with your original message, (na sa totoo lang e prinamis mo namang i-translate kung may interesado), you run the risk of being called pa-kyut.

ReplyDeletehi, true ka dyan. didnt expect that this would lead to something that would even create animosity. the intention was purely to let each blogger reflect and remind themselves if ever. sad, but happy, too, to discover people like you to see it the way i like it be seen.
ReplyDeletethanks for dropping by!
