Familiarity Breeds Complacency, or Contempt?

Tell me.

Do you feel happy now being in the same situation, doing the same routine, and going through the familiar activities and events? Are you smug enough to change the situation, modify the routine, or hold back for a moment and just let the day go by not attempting to change the familiar activities and events?

Or…

Do you hate smelling the same smell, seeing the same place, savor the same food, or suffer the same condition? Do you feel retired of the whole thing and the whole situation ahead?

Sometimes when one gets used to a particular situation, for example, one tends to be complacent. There would be no difficulty of course dealing with new and strange procedures, or with unfamiliar faces or person, or with unknown systems. Solving a predicament will be trouble-free because one is familiar with almost everything.

But oftentimes, familiarity breeds contempt. One gets bored with the things that are often encountered, and usually, the same things that are no different than the former or the foregoing. One gets to hate the customary chain of events resulting to inefficiency or ineffectuality. One gets jaded that he fails to maintain being a positive person and becomes one feeble being.

I’d like to know.

Are you so satisfied? Or consider this strange familiarity with utter disgust?

  1. I think it depends on the context. Like, say, in marriage, one can remark, "Familiarity breeds content (or contempt)."

  3. for a start, man is never contented. i think, it's human nature to get bored of routines and to seek for new horizons unceasingly. that's why people love to take vacations and travel because it breaks the monotony.

  9. I guess this depends on one's personality. If you are a control freak, then probably this is an ideal situation.

    I agree with Jayred.

    Happy weekend.

  10. him zhi! nice of you leaving a note but i did not intend that this post will frustrate someone. i pray that you feel invigorated with the hope that comes from the Lord. sometimes, when i feel bored/frustrated, i talk to Him and ask Him what it is that He wants me to learn from the situation. please be steadfast.

myepinoy, even those in control freaks out sometimes. life is not meant to be perfect. we have to work to make it.

  11. Yeah, I've grown a bit bored of my biology-related subjects in my college since I've already done advanced readings on them back in highschool and the summer before.

because of that I often get tired of it whenever we discuss it "for the first time in class." I often end up doing other non-related stuf in class or worse, doze off.

I do get good grades, but there are times I don't because I skip classes and miss quizes because I already know what's going to be discussed.

Complacency and a bit off boastfullness is indeed not a good thing.

Nice post, you really helped me get something off my mind. Cheers!

one can get out of boredom though. do something that is not according to routine but skipping classes is a no no for me he he

  15. Familiarity does breed contempt but it may not always end up in a ruinous relationship. There's never a perfect relationshiip in the first place. We all maintain relationships with people we consider less than perfect . We find some distasteful, boring, uninspiring, overbearing, materialistic, inisensitive but yet we continue to associate ourselves with their friendships. That's the nature of life - living with imperfection.

  16. Hi Bing. I admit that sometimes I get bored doing the same things over and over and over again. Precisely why, after passing the board exams, I didn't want to work in an office - kasi parang palaging routine ang work. Teaching is different though. Everyday there is always something new, something unexpected.

  17. hi, ruff! it's been a while.. how are you? nice quote, i hope i could remember those lines in times of discontentment.

and i'd like to add the living with imperfection, BW, strengthens our character.

bugsy, but some teachers seem to hate their jobs making themselves ineffective. it is how people see things, i think.

  18. sometimes it is true that familiarity breeds contempt. on the otherhand when that something or someone is gone, it is when we realized how much we miss it or him/her. "Love cannot measure itself until the hour of parting."
